Xiaomi Corporation, a leading player in the global smartphone market, is planning a strategic shift in its operations in India, its second-largest market. The company is looking to streamline its product portfolio and focus on 5G smartphones to regain the market share it lost to rivals, including South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.
Over the years, Xiaomi has held a strong position in the Indian smartphone market. However, regulatory challenges and a confusingly vast product portfolio led to a decline in its market position. As per the data from IDC Corp, a market research firm, Xiaomi ranked fourth in India's smartphone market in the quarter ending March, trailing behind Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo.
India is a fiercely competitive market for smartphone brands, with companies like Apple Inc. striving to boost sales in the world's second-most populous country. Xiaomi is optimistic about a gradual recovery and is strengthening its ties with local partners and simplifying its product range.
However, the company's President at Xiaomi India, Muralikrishnan B., clarified that the company does not expect to regain the number one position this year. He stated, "These are long-term playoff games." He believes that key changes, including fewer smartphone launches, an increased focus on customer experience, and the expansion of sales through physical stores, will help the company return to its earlier success.
In the past, Xiaomi launched too many products, offering too many options, which confused customers. Muralikrishnan admitted, "To a certain extent, we reacted to what competition was doing." Now, the company is making significant changes in India, its most crucial market outside of China.
In response to the Indian government's push, Xiaomi is deepening local sourcing and handing some of its smartphone assembly in India to Dixon Technologies India Ltd., a domestic company. To curb expenditure, the company reportedly laid off as many as 30 employees in June, and more job cuts are likely. However, Muralikrishnan denied any plans for layoffs this year.
As part of its strategy to sell affordable, locally assembled 5G models, Xiaomi will launch a new 5G smartphone on August 1, priced between $200 and $250, as revealed by Anuj Sharma, the company's Chief Marketing Officer.
In conclusion, Xiaomi's strategic shift towards a leaner product portfolio and a focus on 5G smartphones in India is a significant development in the Indian smartphone market. It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the company's market position in the long run.
