While most modern cell phones are waterproof to a certain degree, it is not advisable to take them snorkeling without a protective underwater case. One such case is the Universal Lite, a device that is compatible with a variety of phones, transforming them into underwater cameras. This product is currently undergoing a Kickstarter campaign, created by a South Korean company, Diveroid.

This company has previously introduced us to a device designed to be mounted on third-party underwater cases, which essentially transforms your phone into a diving computer. In comparison, the Universal Lite, comprises a watertight polycarbonate case, allegedly capable of maintaining its seal up to a depth of 49 feet.

This depth means it could potentially be used for scuba diving, but its true purpose is for activities conducted in more shallow waters, such as snorkeling. One of its most notable features is that unlike some other similar devices, it is not restricted to just one particular type of cell phone.

An interior rubber-padded guide inside the case can be adjusted to accommodate a variety of phones from companies such as Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, Huawei, and Oppo. A functional app available on both iOS and Android platforms displays a viewing/control screen, synced with three spring-loaded capacitive buttons on the case itself.

With a simple press of these buttons, users can easily start and stop recording, switch between photo and video modes, and select from four unique camera modes including: ultra-wide-angle, wide-angle, zoom-in, and selfie. The app also corrects colors in the images, ensuring they don't appear completely blue, and lessens the blurring that frequently disrupts the quality of underwater images.

All photos and videos taken are automatically saved in the app's gallery, allowing users to add notations, select their favourite shots, and share them on social media platforms. If the Universal Lite successfully advances to the production stage, it has a proposed retail price of $199.
