Tecno, a renowned name in India's smartphone industry, is aggressively aiming to break into the top five smartphone brands in the country by 2024. This ambitious target, as revealed by a senior company official, is underpinned by a strategy focused on premiumization and a strong push into metropolitan markets.

Understanding the evolving dynamics of the Indian smartphone market, where consumers are increasingly gravitating towards high-end features, Tecno plans to launch 24 new models in 2024. Remarkably, half of these models will be equipped with 5G capabilities, aligning with the global shift towards faster and more efficient mobile technology.

Historically, Tecno has found its strength in tier II and smaller cities, offering affordable yet feature-rich smartphones. Currently positioned as the sixth-ranked brand in India, the company has observed a significant trend towards premium devices. This shift is evident in the rise of the company's average selling price, which escalated from around $150-165 in January 2023 to approximately $245-260 by December 2023.

In line with its upscale strategy, Tecno is now targeting the $205 and above price segment. The brand aims to double its sales in this segment, targeting 1.5 million handset sales in 2024, a substantial increase from 750,000 in 2023. This move signifies Tecno's commitment to capturing a larger share of the premium smartphone market.

Arijeet Talapatra, Tecno's CEO in India, emphasizes the company's focus on innovation and design as crucial factors in capturing the upscale market. The introduction of the foldable range under the Phantom sub-brand is a testament to Tecno's dedication to leading in design and technological advancements.

Tecno's premium smartphones, especially the foldable models in the Phantom series, are setting new standards in the market. With 5G being the undeniable future of mobile technology, Tecno is committed to making this advanced technology accessible to a wider audience. This approach is in line with the market trends, where a significant portion of smartphones in the higher price segments are already 5G-enabled.

By combining its focus on premiumization, targeting top-tier cities, and strengthening its 5G portfolio, Tecno is confidently moving towards its goal of becoming one of the top five smartphone brands in India by 2024. This strategy not only aligns with the current market trends but also positions Tecno as a forward-thinking player in the competitive smartphone industry.
