The availability of Android updates depends on their release and doesn’t follow a guaranteed schedule. In recent times, many manufacturers have announced increased support for Android updates and security features for some of their smartphone models. We have compiled the latest details about the duration of update support committed by different manufacturers, along with specific conditions tied to these promises.

Google Pixel leads when it comes to efficient and prompt Android updates. Those who prioritize quick updates will find Google Pixel phones the best choice. The updates are timely, and the wait time is practically nonexistent. Google Pixel phones come pre-installed with the latest Android version. Notably, the Google Pixel 8 is promised to get seven years of system and security updates. Previous models will get three years of new systems and five years of security updates.

Leading the pack, Samsung broke away from the traditional two-year update window. Initially promising three years of updates, the company pushed its promise to four years for its high-end phones, which is quite a leap from the norm. It's significant to note that security update support is promised for up to five years for top-of-the-line handsets and select business phones. Apart from high-end smartphones, the duration of update support could range from one to three years depending on the device.

In a commendable move, OnePlus extended its update support by another year. Therefore, the company promises four years of Android updates starting 2023 for its most advanced smartphones. The mid-range devices, however, will still get a two-year update cycle. For security updates, the high-end devices could get support for three to four years, whereas the rest of the models would get three years of support.

OPPO has jumped on the bandwagon of enhanced Android update support. Any high-end OPPO phones released in 2023 will receive four years of Android updates and an impressive five years of security updates. Beyond this, other OPPO devices may get variable update durations with no set rules.

Vivo announced a departure from the standard two-year update cycle by increasing support duration for its top-notch X series models. These models will now receive up to three years of both Android and security updates. However, for the remaining series, the update duration is expected to be case-dependent and can range from none to two years.

Some manufacturers, including Huawei, Honor, Sony, and Motorola, have not publicly announced intentions to extend their Android or security update support beyond the standard. In these cases, the high-end models could get updates for two years while mid-range and entry-level devices might get updates for up to a year or even none. Therefore, if you're looking for long-term software support, carefully weighing the support duration against other factors like the additional cost should be done.
