Samsung is set to launch an enhanced version of their Galaxy SmartTag tracker, specifically tailored to assist users in locating their valuable possessions. This new product, named the Galaxy SmartTag 2, employs both Bluetooth Low Energy and UWB (ultra-wideband). A highlight feature of this device involves the integration of augmented reality technology to provide visual guidance for users attempting to locate their belongings.
The SmartTag 2 includes a 'Lost mode' feature, which allows users to append their contact details to the tag. Should someone happen upon an item marked with this tag, they can access this contact information using their device’s NFC reader. In addition, Samsung has incorporated an 'unknown tag alerts' function. Users will be warned if an unidentified SmartTag appears to be following them, aiming to mitigate concerns regarding the misuse of location tracking services.
Samsung also claims to have enhanced the battery life for their second-generation tracker. In normal mode, the device is expected to function for up to 500 days per charge, which represents a substantial 50 percent improvement over the original Galaxy SmartTag's battery life. Moreover, a new power-saving mode has been introduced that should allow for up to 700 days of usage.
PCMag recently tested Samsung's new tracker and noted the inclusion of a user-replaceable coin-style battery (CR2032). While it may require a pin tool to exchange the battery, and the task may be slightly challenging, at least it can be undertaken at home. Users of the SmartTag 2 will not be forced to purchase a completely new tracker every time the battery is drained. This is a significant improvement over the original model.
The SmartTag 2 holds an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. A noteworthy feature is the automatic re-syncing capability when switching to a new Galaxy smartphone. Utilizing a Samsung account, the tag will automatically synchronize with your new device. However, much like the original SmartTag, this new tracker remains limited to compatibility with Galaxy smartphones only.
Additionally, users will need to maintain at least Android 9.0 or a more recent version, and have a device with a minimum of 3 GB RAM for the tag to function correctly. The SmartThings Find app is also a necessity, as the tracker does not function with Google's Find My Device application. The app has been updated to provide a full screen map view and a more user-friendly interface to simplify the process of tracking a tag.
The Samsung SmartTag 2 will be available globally from October 11, with a standard retail price of $29.99. You can choose between black or white according to your preference.
