In the world of smartphone manufacturing, Samsung has continued to come out on top, as reported in the third quarter analysis of 2023, conducted by Canalys. The Korean tech giant was not only able to maintain its position as the leading original equipment manufacturer but in fact, increased its gap from Apple, a fierce competitor, compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

While it is true that Samsung's overall market share declined slightly from Q3 2022, Samsung managed to stay ahead of Apple, its closest market competitor, in the third quarter of 2023. Samsung held a 20% share of the global smartphone market, while Apple trailed behind with 17% share. This is a shift from the previous year, where Samsung and Apple held 22% and 18% market shares, respectively.

Xiaomi, another name to watch out for in the smartphone industry, held its place firmly as the third-largest player possessing a 14% market share, which remained constant from the previous year. Struggling slightly compared to last year, OPPO ranked fourth with its market share reducing by one percent, taking it to 9%.

Rounding up the top 5 is China’s TRANSSION, a potentially unfamiliar name to some, accounted for 9% market share, indicating a healthy rise from 6% in the previous year. TRANSSION is not a standalone brand, rather it is a conglomerate that manages several smartphone brands under its umbrella including TECNO, Infinix, and Itel.

In its report, Canalys also indicated optimism as global smartphone market trends showed promising signs of a recovery. This comes after the company revealed that Samsung delivered an impressive total of 57.2 million smartphones during the reporting quarter.

On a global scale, smartphone shipments witnessed a marginal fall of 1% in Q3 2023, bringing the total to 293.4 million units. However, this could be a silver lining considering the slowdown in the rate of decline and visible signs of recovery. The report highlights Samsung's foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 as significant contributors to the steady performance during this quarter. Meanwhile, Apple gave a commendable performance with the sales of its iPhone 15 series.
