Samsung, having been the pioneering Original Equipment Manufacturer to inaugurate the era of foldable smartphones, currently commands the market with its five iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold flagship models. A recent media report reveals that Samsung is poised to shift gear towards introducing more budget-friendly foldable models from next year. Huawei, another strong player in this market, is also reported to have plans of rolling out competitively priced foldable smartphones next year.

In addition to the existing big players, the report suggests that other Android phone producers are likely to add their offerings in this sphere as well. Adding another dimension to the product offerings are two triple-foldable screen phones that have been rumored to be launched in the coming year. The report, based on a study by TrendForce, highlights that Samsung and Huawei intend to expand the market for foldable phones by introducing more competitively priced products specifically targeted at the mid-range market segment. This could potentially make foldable technology more accessible by lowering the price threshold.

Huawei, which once enjoyed a dominant position in the foldable phone market, is rumored to be working on a triple-foldable screen phone that could be launched as early as March next year. The market for such triple-foldable screen phones is expected to be officially launched in 2024. Amid these developments, several Android smartphone manufacturers have been active in introducing new foldable phones in recent months, with more than 13 foldable smartphone models having been launched in a span of just three months.

In terms of the pricing aspect, the report indicates that the lowest price for foldable phones has dropped in 2023. The trend is expected to continue into 2024, with more brands likely to release higher-value foldable phone products, thereby driving the wider adoption of foldable phones. According to the report, the end of 2023 could witness a significant increase in the shipments of foldable smartphones to a staggering estimate of 18.3 million units, resulting in a 43% year-on-year increase. This trend is expected to continue into 2024, with a growth estimate of 38%, nearly 25.2 million units.

By 2027, the report expects the shipments to reach up to 70 million units, capturing about five percent of the global smartphone market. This aligns with speculation that Samsung is set to launch the Fan Edition versions of its foldable phones from next year. Samsung is slated to introduce the Galaxy Z FE model subsequent to the debut of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in the coming year. The move is expected to prompt other Android manufacturers to follow the same course, leading to an accelerated expansion of the foldable phone market.
