Samsung Electronics maintains a positive outlook on the success of its newly released foldable smartphones, aimed to captivate the younger generation of users. Recently, the younger demographic has shown a stronger preference for Apple's iPhones. Roh Tae-moon, the President of Samsung Electronics Mobile Experience Division, provided this perspective last Friday. This statement follows a survey that revealed that smartphone users under 30 in Korea preferred iPhones over Samsung Galaxy. Additionally, some media outlets reported that Samsung's smartphone-using adolescents are often sidelined by their peers at school.
"The recently introduced Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the product designed to specifically appeal to young consumers," said Roh Tae-moon during a press conference two days after the Galaxy Unpacked event held in Seoul. Samsung has identified and analyzed the features and apps prevalent among the younger audience. The company would double its efforts to optimize these features based on its findings.
Since their launch, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Z Flip 5 have been well-received by tech journalists and influencers worldwide. Given the current popularity, Samsung foresees its sales in foldable smartphones this year to parallel that of the global foldable smartphone market, despite the present challenges in the smartphone market due to the unpromising macroeconomic prospects. "We nearly attained our 2022 sales target of 10 million foldable smartphones," stated Roh.
According to forecasts from global market researchers TrendForce and Counterpoint, the global foldable smartphone market will see yearly growth of 55 percent and 42 percent, respectively. With these projections, Samsung estimates its sales target for this year to be approximately 15 million units. Market research institutions predict that global sales of all foldable smartphones will exceed 100 million devices in the upcoming five years.
Roh envisages the accumulated global sales of Samsung's foldable smartphones to exceed 30 million devices by 2023. "As a leader in the foldable smartphone sector equipped with the most up to date technology, Samsung will ensure it retains its position as a principal performer," Roh stated. He also addressed queries concerning the absence of a dustproof function in the new foldable smartphones, reassuring that this feature would be included in future releases. The decision to hold the Galaxy Unpacked event, previously hosted overseas, in Korea for the first time was driven by Samsung's marketing team's recommendations.
