Samsung continues to magnify its range of Tactical Edition products with the launch of two innovative smartphones - the Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and the Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition. Primarily designed for military professionals and others in similar high-duty roles, these robust smartphones incorporate additional features not found on their traditional variants, making them ideal for use in challenging and tactical situations.
Starting with the Galaxy XCover 6 Pro Tactical Edition, this device is valued for its MIL-STD-810H certification, which empowers it to endure extreme climatic conditions and maintain water resistance in depths of up to 5 feet for a duration of up to 30 minutes. Contrastingly, the Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition is rated IP68, and it boasts a hard-wearing military-grade encasing that can be attached to the chest or worn on the forearm.
Both these smartphones are equipped with a night vision mode for users operating night vision optic equipment. They also support automatic touch sensitivity which allows operation even when the user is wearing gloves, and an auto-rotating lock screen feature which is useful during use with flip-down chest mounts. The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition smartphones have commendable external GPS support offering precise location data from the field, and they can connect to drone feeds and laser range finders to amplify the efficacy of a mission.
In terms of communication abilities, both Tactical Edition devices are capable of supporting tactical radio and mission device protocols, using specifically-built drivers. Not forgetting the conventional cellular capabilities such as LTE, CBRS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. One of the key features of these smartphones is the Stealth Mode, which, when activated, disables LTE and e-911 thereby silencing all RF broadcasting including GPS at a hardware level, thus allowing the user secure, entirely off-grid communication. An added feature allows for the device illumination to switch on and off when used with night vision equipment, in order to remain inconspicuous.
Addressing the cybersecurity aspect, these Tactical Edition smartphones come with Samsung's Knox providing hardware-level encryption, protecting confidential data even when the device is turned off with the inclusion of Knox Dual Data at Rest (DualDAR). The Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition smartphones also support serverless license activation, enabling flexible deployment in a multitude of operational environments.
On the software side, both the Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition and Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition come with Android 13-based One UI 5.1 preinstalled. Complete with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) and the Battlefield Assisted Trauma Distributed Observation Kit (BATDOK), these kits enhance real-time situational awareness for operators through mapping, messaging, and geo-fencing, and gather and disseminate real-time patient encounter data respectively. Enhanced support for Samsung DeX and dual VPN chaining allows for additional layers of security, and the ability to automatically accept and record calls in speaker mode or prevent any outgoing calls as per requirement.
The Galaxy S23 Tactical Edition is loaded with 8GB RAM and a 256GB storage capacity, while the Galaxy XCover6 Pro Tactical Edition offers 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. The respective prices for these specialized Tactical Edition smartphones are yet to be disclosed, and their sales will be restricted to military operators only, making them unavailable for regular consumers.
