The distinct angled design of the Realme C55, highlighted by its rounded corners, gifts it an appealing look at first sight. The handset's classic black hue and the appearance of a brushed metal back showcases superior design; however, it is entirely made of plastic. The glossy camera module slightly contrasts with the overall design. An unusually interesting variant is the Sunshower, distinguished by its iridescent-colored back. The lightweight and thin features make the phone effortlessly comfortable to hold, especially when compared to the bulkier Samsung Galaxy A14 LTE. The device comes in two storage variants with Realme advertising an increasing RAM capacity. However, this includes a large portion of virtual RAM which utilizes part of the slower mass storage flash, resulting in potentially slower app execution.
Conveniently, the Realme C55 supports NFC which easily enables services such as Google Pay. The device can accommodate two SIM cards along with a separate microSD slot. However, based on our testing with Angelbird V60 microSD, the reader appears somewhat slower. The reasonably-priced Realme C55, a 4G smartphone, covers most required frequencies for domestic use but potential users should investigate its viability for foreign travel. Our testing revealed moderate mobile reception but it maintained its receptivity in an inner-city environment.
The smartphone comes with the latest Android 13 and is overlaid with Realme UI, providing some changes to the system in certain areas. The device is up-to-date with security patches available till July 2023 but it is uncertain how long updates will be available. Buyers should be prepared for a host of preinstalled third-party apps included by the manufacturer ex-factory. When connected to charging, information appears around the Apple Dynamic Island-inspired front camera which only becomes visible under certain conditions. The 90 Hz easy-to-use touchscreen provides a smooth gliding surface, featuring an integrated fingerprint sensor on the right side of the standby button for unlocking the phone after a brief delay. It also includes face recognition; however, this is based only on 2D images making it susceptible to manipulation.
By offering a 64-megapixel main camera, the Realme C55 aspires to distinguish itself from its competitors. Regular utilization reduces resolution, resulting in 16-megapixel shots with greater light sensitivity and the ability to use the full resolution in a special mode. Images appear colorful and somewhat clear, but a close look reveals coarse reproduction details. Although the camera performs relatively well for its price range, the absence of a wide-angle lens limits flexibility. The phone supports 1080p 60 fps videos, granting it an advantage over other models in this price range due to the smoother picture.
The device's IPS screen, with an extended FullHD resolution, is comparatively bright with 469 cd/m² but falls behind the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G's AMOLED screen, available in the same price range. Specifically, the Realme C55 screen's brightness concentrates in the middle rather than distributing evenly across the screen area. The reasonably colorful and bright contrast ratio is decent, although, blue cast made its appearance in our spectrophotometer testing. The MediaTek Helio G88 proves to be a typical SoC for the mid-range and the Realme C55's performance was competitive. The performance drop was minimal even after 20 demanding benchmark runs.
The speaker, situated at the bottom edge of the smartphone, produces sensibly loud sound without overdriving. Connectivity options include a 3.5mm port and Bluetooth for connecting external audio devices. The exceptional 33-watt charging technology enables charging in over an hour and the battery life extends up to 16:15 hours under medium load. The device takes satisfactory photos but still needs to compete against high performing phones such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 4G or the Honor X8a. The Realme C55 is available, with data storage options of 128 GB and 256 GB, on Amazon, at approximately $199 and $215 respectively.
