Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revitalize the smartphone industry, according to the CEO of Qualcomm, a leading U.S. chip manufacturer. Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Inc., shared these insights during the company's press conference at the CES 2022 event, held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 4, 2022.

The CES annual consumer technology trade show, renowned as the largest of its kind globally, is underway from January 5-7. Some companies have opted to go solely virtual or even cancel their participation due to the significant spike in COVID-19 cases, causing concerns of safety and health risks.

In an interview with Ryan Browne, Amon emphasized the transformative potential of AI for the smartphone market. He suggested that the technology could breathe new life into the industry, sparking what he termed as a 'new upgrade cycle'.

Smartphones have, in recent times, become an indispensable part of daily life, used for a multitude of tasks ranging from communication, organization, entertainment, and even work. This expanding functionality has led to steady improvements, catering to the evolving consumer needs.

However, the market has faced stagnation due to saturation and lack of major innovative breakthroughs. But, with AI's integration into smartphones, an innovation-led growth is plausible. This advancement could drive consumers to upgrade their devices more frequently, invigorating the entire sector in the process.

This prediction by Qualcomm's leader caters to the technology industry's enthusiasm towards AI and its potential to reshape industries, including the smartphone market. A revitalized market promises comforting prospects for companies like Qualcomm, who stand to benefit from a renewed demand for advanced chipsets.
