Following a disclosure made in a letter to the US Director of National Intelligence, it has been made known that the National Security Agency has been partaking in the act of purchasing personal data that has been procured illicitly from smartphone users. This data acquisition has been facilitated through the apps present on the users' smartphones. This public disclosure was carried out by a United States senator, Ron Wyden, who is a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence. Within the contents of the letter, Senator Wyden called for the security agencies in the United States to refrain from the practice of purchasing illegally-obtained data. Further, he demanded that existing data that had been obtained through such unscrupulous manners should be rendered void and thoroughly expunged.
