In Clearwater, Florida, police reported that a female victim used her smart watch to contact emergency services during a temporary kidnapping scenario that unfolded last weekend. This innovative utilization of wearable technology may have helped to save her life, demonstrating the potential safety applications of these devices.
According to the arrest affidavit issued by the Clearwater Police Department, the incident occurred on October 22. The primary suspect was identified as Lyle Boyd, aged 36, and a resident of Largo. The charge against him is domestic battery against the female victim.
In a shocking turn of events, police reports suggest that Boyd forcefully took the woman, against her will, and attempted to leave the area known as June Bells Drive with her in his vehicle. This was allegedly intended to prevent her from contacting any forms of help or rescue.
The preliminary investigation found that the alleged culprit had seized the victim's phone. However, displaying quick wit and resourcefulness, the woman was able to reach out to the appropriate authorities, dialing 911 from her smart watch. Tragically, before help arrived, Boyd was reported to have forcibly removed the watch from her wrist and discarded it out of the moving vehicle.
Despite this failed attempt to silence her call for help, the woman endured. The police learned that after a distance of half a mile from the point of abduction, she bravely escaped from the vehicle. After painstakingly retrieving her damaged smart watch, she reached out to emergency services again for assistance.
Upon their arrival, the police officers found visible injuries on the woman, providing further evidence of the traumatic events. She also handed them the damaged smart watch which played a vital role in her rescue and would serve as additional evidence in the case.
Following the incident, Boyd was arrested and charged on October 26. His charges included kidnapping with bodily harm, tampering with a witness, and domestic battery. These accusations are based on the arrest records provided by the Clearwater Police Department.
