Apple's iPhone 14 has emerged as the most shipped smartphone in the first half of the current year. This information is based on data generated by Omdia, a notable research firm. The preference among consumers has seemingly shifted towards high-end devices, contrasting with previous trends of opting for mid-range to low-end alternatives. The first half of the year has seen iPhone 14 Pro Max reach a shipment of a whopping 26.5 million units, outperforming every other phone model from any other manufacturer. Furthermore, iPhone 14 Pro trailed behind with 21 million units in shipment, as per the Omdia’s “Smartphone Model Market Tracker – 2Q23” report.
Alongside these range-topping models, Apple also boasts of the third and fourth top-shipping models. The third position saw the iPhone 14 deliver an impressive 16.5 million units while the iPhone 13 sold 15.5 million units. There has been a distinct difference in terms of which type of smartphones consumers choose. A year ago, consumers preferred the iPhone 13, suggesting their inclination towards flagship devices albeit with entry-level attributes. However, this year, the crown has been taken by the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Being the priciest in Apple's arsenal, it signifies a growing consumer interest in more premium range devices.
Over the past few years, there hasn’t been much change brought in by phone manufacturers. Most of them have been releasing incremental upgrades to their devices, focusing on enhancing the camera and integrating more powerful processors. Because of such minor improvements, consumers have developed a certain feeling of boredom when it comes to smartphones. Flagship phones from tech giants like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi, boasting hefty price tags exceeding $1,000, have also been a reason for discouraging people from buying these phones. As a result, consumers have been waiting for a valid reason to replace their phones - typically when it malfunctions.
Despite the steep pricing, consumers have shown a willingness to pay a high premium for top-tier models, showcasing their inclinations towards top-of-the-line features. Samsung's Galaxy A14 was the fifth highest shipping phone during the first half of the year, delivering a commendable 12.4 million units. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, being South Korea’s top model, secured the sixth position with 9.6 million unit shipments. On the other hand, smartphones hailing from Chinese manufacturers failed to mark their presence within the top 10 best-shipping smartphones. Omdia attributed this to double-digit declines in shipments from 2022, which was a result of a slump in the mid to low-end smartphone market.
As Apple prepares for the launch of its next big thing, the iPhone 15, these numbers provide us with important insights into consumer sentiments. Omdia expects Apple's overall iPhone shipments to remain relatively constant or see a minor decline during the current year. However, the shipments of the Pro and Pro Max models are expected to continue growing due to the growing demand for premium models, according to Jusy Hong, senior research manager at Omdia. As per Omdia's prediction, global smartphone shipments will decline 6% year on year to 1.15 billion devices, marking the worst performance in a decade. Despite these predictions, Apple’s stock continued to rise, marking a 37.5% surge year-to-date in early trading Monday.
