During the opening ceremony of the India Mobile Congress 2023, the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi relayed a positive future forecast of India's position in the global mobile manufacturing sector. In his words, 'It brings us great joy to envision a near future where the entire globe is utilizing smartphones manufactured on Indian soil.'
PM Modi elaborated on India's journey in the mobile industry, articulating how a few years ago, the nation was merely an importer of these devices. Nevertheless, a shift has occurred by 2023, with India now playing a pivotal role in the production of most smartphones, including but not limited to high-end models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and iPhone 15 series.
Beyond local consumption, a vast quantity of these locally manufactured phones is being exported to international markets. Thanks to these developments, India proudly holds the title of the second-largest mobile manufacturer worldwide.
During his address, PM Modi reiterated Google's upcoming plans to produce the Pixel 8 series in India by 2024. Stressing on the overwhelming necessity for the country to bolster its semiconductor production, he expressed his belief that this can propel India into a dominant position within the global manufacturing industry.
The Prime Minister renewed focus on India's substantial Production-Linked Incentive scheme worth Rs 80,000 crore, which incentivizes original equipment manufacturers to participate in the 'Make in India' initiative.
The prominent global issue of cybersecurity was also on PM Modi's agenda. During the G20 meetings, topics such as network infrastructure security and cybersecurity obtained significant attention. The Prime Minister underscored that enhanced self-reliance is critical for bolstering cybersecurity measures and securing national network infrastructure. In light of this, he denoted the necessity for a proactive conversation to devise robust defenses against potential cyber threats.
Adhering to the broader theme of the Indian Mobile Congress centring around connectivity, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated 100 novel 5G labs across various Indian schools and educational institutions. He spoke highly of the global admiration for the speed of 5G rollouts across India, and confidently stated that the nation will emerge as a global leader with the initiation of 6G. Modi imparted that the average broadband speed had thrice-fold increased since the beginning of the 5G rollout in the previous year, 2022. He also revealed that India has significantly moved up in terms of overall internet speed, ranking in the 40s now, as opposed to its prior 118th place.
