The smartphone industry in Canada has seen a relaxed wave of improvements in 2023, with an increasing influx of foldable phones. However, the traditional candy bar-shaped phones still rule the market. In my last comprehensive review in 2021, companies such as LG fell out of the spotlight, Motorola made no major breakthroughs, and Asus was largely absent. However, 2023 has seen a mild escalation in the industry's landscape.
OnePlus's introduction of the OnePlus Open and OnePlus 11 Pro has added a fresh dynamic to the market. Also, Google's range of Pixel flagships alongside a new foldable phone, the Google Pixel Fold, have stirred up excitement, although its unavailability in Canada prevents its inclusion in this list. In addition to these, Motorola has unveiled the Razr+, Razr, and the Edge Pro 2023, while Apple has released the iPhone 15 series, and Samsung its flagship S series, further enriching the selection of smartphones in Canada.
Despite the growing popularity of foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 or the Razr+, these new form factor phones have been excluded from the list as they are not necessarily the best overall phones but excel in compactness. The iPhone 15 Pro Max leads the pack, with a 6.7-inch display, a 120Hz refresh rate, a titanium body, and a trio of high-quality cameras, making it one of the best phones in the Canadian market. The phone is priced starting from $1,144.03.
Riding at the helm of Apple's offering, the iPhone 15 is an excellent choice. It has an impressive 6.1-inch HDR10-capable display and an A16 Bionic processor, which provides top-tier speeds. The camera is an upgraded 48-megapixel sensor with an 1.6 26mm lens, offering high-quality pictures with depth, details, and color. The iPhone 15 starts at $891.83.
Then we have Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra, a robust phone with a 120Hz refresh rate 6.8-inch panel, up to 12GB of RAM, and a giant 200-megapixel primary camera. Though the ultra-high-resolution shots can sometimes seem slightly oversaturated, overall picture quality is rich in detail and color. The S23 Ultra starts at $1,130.95.
Google's Pixel 8 Pro is another strong contender in the market. Despite some minor setbacks, it packs quite the punch with its high-resolution 6.7-inch screen, 12GB RAM, the latest Tensor G3 chip, and a 5,050mAh battery. Despite some reported screen issues among a few users, the Pixel 8 Pro delivers exceptional photo quality, thanks to its advanced camera array and 'Real Tone' feature. The starting price for the Pixel 8 Pro is $869.94.
Other notable mentions are Moto Edge Pro 2023 with a triple camera setup and up to 512GB of storage, priced from $1,224.03, and the OnePlus Open, a foldable phone with impressive specs priced at $1,577.42. While these smartphones have proven to provide great user experiences, it's crucial to note that your final decision should ultimately be influenced by your personal preferences and needs.
