The Withings ScanWatch Light, available for $250, is a recommended product for those seeking simplistic elegance with just enough intelligent features for its price. Touted for its comfortable wear, long-lasting battery, comprehensive health and sleep tracking, at an affordable rate, it simply avoids looking overly technical. Its size and the complicated nature of its application do pose some drawbacks, but for its cost, the ScanWatch Light offers a balance of common smartwatch features and a pleasing analog design.

Distinguished by its traditional timepiece aesthetics, Withings' ScanWatch series smears the line between analogue watches and smartwatches. Sporting a simple and classic design, the ScanWatch Light sports analog watch hands that are automatically set through the Withings application during its setup. The watch comes with a 0.63-inch grayscale OLED display constituting 282 pixels per inch (ppi) resolution, nested at the top of the watch face. The crown serves to switch on the display or it can be programmed to light up when you lift your wrist, though it costs battery life.

However, in contrast to the ScanWatch 2, the ScanWatch Light is available only in a 37mm case, weighing a mere 27.1 grams without the wristband. The case and crown are made of stainless steel, and the watch face is sturdy with Gorilla Glass built in. It also boasts a water resistance rating of 5ATM. Offered in a range of colors including Pearl White, Blue, Green, and Black, the ScanWatch Light is not only comfortable to wear but also pairs well with any ensemble.

Between the ScanWatch Light and the ScanWatch 2 is a $100 price difference, and a few distinctions. The ScanWatch Light misses out on the 6 o’clock position step-goal progress feature and the health monitoring functions of the ScanWatch 2. However, it offers heart rate monitoring, sleep tracking, and cycle tracking, serving those who do not require an exhaustive list of health-tracking features.

Though starting a workout does require a bit of an effort due to the lack of touch screen, the watch offers automatic detection for four exercise types: walking, running, cycling and swimming. Furthermore, the sleep tracking feature works efficiently, despite being found less accurate when compared with Oura Ring. Errors such as the late detection of falling asleep and lumping deep and REM sleep simultaneously do occur. However, the sleep scores and average heart rate bpm are fairly accurate.

The Withings Health Mate app, while intrusive with persistent notifications, offers comprehensive breakdowns of the health data harvested by the ScanWatch Light. However, detailed insights come at an additional cost of $10 with Withings' subscription program called Withings+. The ScanWatch provides less than optimal experience for smartphone notifications due to its smaller screen size.

Withings claims a 30-day battery life for the ScanWatch Light, and verified by user experience, it is confirmed to be accurate for the most part. A proprietary charging solution with a spring-loaded side grips the ScanWatch securely, holding it in place even if it's bumped, addressing the earlier issue faced with first ScanWatch. The charging process takes approximately two hours. The ScanWatch Light is available for purchase directly from Withings’ website or from major retailers, offered in various colors exclusive to the Withings' website.
