Embedded SIM or eSIM technology has risen to prominence in recent years. Initially utilized in smartwatches, this technology can now also be found in a variety of smartphones. Apple led the way in embracing this technology, with its iPhone 14 being the first flagship device to become exclusively eSIM compatible in the United States. This move resulted in the removal of the physical SIM slot altogether. Using an eSIM has numerous benefits, such as allowing for the storage of multiple profiles. However, one major issue is the complexity involved when a user wishes to switch their SIM card information over to another device. To address this issue, Google announced in February that there would soon be support for eSIM transfers on Android devices.
A report by 9to5Google indicates that a feature for eSIM transfer will soon be available on Android. This tool will give users the ability to transfer their eSIM profiles to another compatible device. This feature is already established on iPhones, where it operates almost seamlessly. Google is set to replicate this in its own operating system. The forthcoming eSIM transfer tool was spotted in Google Play Services.
A user with the handle @AssembleDebug posted screenshots of the forthcoming eSIM transfer functionality. Although it is not yet live, AssembleDebug shared that the process of transferring an eSIM involves initiating the transfer on the current device, followed by a QR code scan on the receiving device. This UI arrangement is said to be similar to the fast pair feature found on Android. Once the code is scanned, the process of transfer is to be completed on the receiving device.
It is unclear if this feature will extend across differing operating systems, for instance from Android to iOS or vice versa. Regardless, it is apparent that with this new feature, Android users will now be able to conveniently transfer their eSIM from one device to another.
eSIM technology offers a number of advantages over the traditional SIM. For one, it eliminates the need for a physical change of a SIM card when switching devices. With an eSIM, the process simply involves transferring the eSIM profile to the new device. In addition, eSIMs offer an extra level of security, given that it makes it impossible for someone to covertly remove your SIM card from your device for mischievous purposes. However, eSIM is primarily available only in premium smartphones for now and not all countries have the infrastructure to support it due to its relatively new advancements in technology.
