The foldable smartphones sector, although only a newcomer to the global market scene, is experiencing rapid growth and expansion. Samsung Infinity Flex Display gave us our first real glimpse into this futuristic technology towards the end of 2018. Today, two main factors are fueling the growth of this market: increased affordability and accessibility of these unique devices.
Omdia's recent data has revealed that Huawei, currently at the forefront of this market, dominates with a substantial market share of 39.8%. Despite being an early innovator in the field of foldable technology, Samsung follows behind with a 16.7% stake in the market. Sliding into third place is Honor with a 13.0% market share.
The competition is fierce. Vivo, for instance, has secured a solid 11.3% stake, while OPPO holds 7.0% of this growing market. Even technology giants such as Google and Xiaomi have thrown their hats into the ring, capturing market shares of 5.6% and 3.1% respectively. Other contenders also continue to stake their claims, making their presence known and substantiated by their respective market shares.
Interestingly, Chinese brands are largely dominating this global landscape. Even though Huawei's overall smartphone sales took a hit, its performance in the foldable smartphone sector has been impressive. Remarkably, in 2022, the firm achieved a market share of almost 10% after presenting the Huawei Mate Xs 2 side folding and Pocket S flip to the world.
Fascinatingly, Huawei managed this feat without having access to Google Mobile Services (GMS), and their foldable phone launched in March made a significant impact, capturing half of the Chinese foldable phone market in the first half of the year. The launch of the Mate X5 consolidated Huawei’s position further, appealing to consumers with slim, light-weight features and long-lasting batteries.
Samsung, however, is not to be outdone and has announced its ambitious plans to sell 20 million foldable smartphones in the coming year. This goal springs from the fact that the sales of their foldable phones surpassed those of their Samsung Note generation in 2022. Despite this achievement, they still have a mountain to climb, especially considering the competitive pressure from Chinese manufacturers like Vivo, who offer more affordable models in the market.
Despite its rapid growth, the foldable smartphone market is still in its initial stages. As technology continues to evolve and foldable smartphones become a mainstream commodity, it is anticipated that the current market shares will dramatically change. Presently, pricing remains a significant factor, with no budget-friendly foldable phones available in the market. The burgeoning market, however, saw Chinese shipments of foldable phones grow by a whopping 102 percent in the first half of the year, compared to the same period in the preceding year.
