Design and Size comparison

iPhone 14 Plus vs 14 Pro

Design differences between these models in the 14th lineup primarily revolve around the device dimensions. The premium 14 Pro has a slightly smaller body, while the basic Plus model is larger. They weigh approximately the same.

One of the main external distinctions between these smartphones is the presence of a Dynamic Island — this functional area is featured on the iPhone 14 Pro, while the 14 Plus retains the old notch.

Additionally, the premium Pro model has a back panel made of matte glass and Surgical-grade stainless steel, while the basic models feature glossy glass and Aerospace-grade aluminum.

Display comparison

14 Plus vs 14 Pro display comparison

The display size of The iPhone 14 Plus is a 6.7-inch screen, while the iPhone 14 Pro comes with a 6.1-inch display. However, the advantages of the Plus model end there because it did not receive the Dynamic Island, always-on display, or the adaptive refresh rate technology up to 120Hz, known as ProMotion.

In terms of brightness in the comparison of iPhone 14 Plus vs Pro, the Pro model also triumphs. Its peak screen brightness is 2000 nits in sunlight, whereas the Plus model is only 1200 nits.

Battery life

The Battery performance of the iPhone 14 Plus is 4325 mAh, while the iPhone 14 Pro has a capacity of 3200 mAh. This is not surprising, given its smaller form factor. Such a difference allowed the 14 Plus to achieve a longer battery life:

  • Video playback: 26 hours and 23 hours for iPhone 14 Plus vs iPhone 14 Pro.
  • Streaming video playback: both models offer 20 hours.
  • Audio playback: 100 hours for iPhone 14 Plus compared to 70 hours for iPhone 14 Pro.

Charging speed

To fully charge the iPhone 14 Plus, it takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the iPhone 14 Pro replenishes its battery capacity in about 2 hours. Both models support fast charging and wireless charging with MagSafe.

Speaker test

In terms of sound quality, the Apple iPhone 14 Plus vs Apple iPhone 14 Pro are approximately at the same level. Both devices support Dolby Atmos and spatial audio. As for the volume, the premium model performed better in tests—89.5 dB compared to 79.8 dB at the maximum level.

Performance

The iPhone 14 Pro is equipped with the A16 Bionic chip, featuring two high-performance cores running at 3.46 GHz and four energy-efficient cores at 2.02 GHz. The chips are manufactured using a 4nm process and contain 16 billion transistors. In the base Plus model, the processor is the earlier A15 Bionic. However, this is more of a marketing move than a noticeable performance gap. While the chip is produced using a 5nm process with 15 billion transistors, its architecture is very close to the A16 Bionic, featuring the same six cores, slightly lower frequency for the pair of high-performance cores at 3.24 GHz, and a nearly identical graphics system with five GPU cores. The only notable difference is the absence of the Display Engine coprocessor for Dynamic Island functionality. In any case, the iPhone 14 Pro will be around 10-15% faster.

By the way, this performance gain is largely influenced by the faster RAM. While the iPhone 14 Plus uses LPDDR4X with a frequency of 4.26 GHz, the iPhone 14 Pro features the more modern and quicker LPDDR5 operating at 6.4 GHz. Regarding storage, the Pro model offers a 1 TB version, which is not available in the Plus variant.

At the launch of both versions, they ran on iOS 16, and they have since been updated to the 17th version of the operating system. In the comparison of iPhone 14 Plus versus Pro, neither model has a distinct advantage in this regard.

Camera comparison

14 Pro vs 14 Plus camera comparison

The iPhone 14 Plus features the familiar 12-megapixel camera with an f/1.5 aperture, accompanied by an ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.4 aperture.

In the iPhone 14 Pro, a triple-camera setup is installed. The primary sensor has a resolution of 48 MP, with pixels capable of combining in groups of four, resulting in standard 12-megapixel photos with significantly higher detail and low noise levels. However, it's also possible to capture images at the full 48-megapixel resolution in ProRAW format. These photos exhibit an even more excessive level of detail, allowing for cropping and zooming without a substantial loss of quality.

All cameras in the iPhone 14 series support Night mode, and the iPhone 14 Pro introduces a Night mode for portraits. The premium model also features the Photonic Engine for enhanced image processing and the capability to shoot ProRes video recording in 4K with both the main and front cameras. And also, next to the cameras, there is a LIDAR scanner—a laser rangefinder that assists with augmented reality tasks and helps with focusing in low-light conditions.

Price, availability

14 Plus vs 14 Pro

At the launch, the iPhone 14 Plus was priced at $799 for the base storage version, $899 for 256GB, and $1099 for 512GB. The iPhone 14 Pro had the following prices:

  • $999 for the 128GB version;
  • $1099 for 256GB;
  • $1299 for 512GB;
  • $1499 for 1TB.

Following the release of the 15th smartphone lineup, Apple traditionally discontinued the Pro model to avoid competing with the new flagship devices. This model can be found on marketplaces.

As for the 14 Plus, it is expected to see a price reduction in the near future.

Conclusions

In fact, the difference between the iPhone 14 Pro and Plus is quite substantial. Advantages of the iPhone 14 Plus include a larger screen diagonal and longer battery life. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Pro offers top-notch internals that not only match the base iPhone 15, but even surpass it.
