Chinese smartphone manufacturers, Xiaomi and Huawei Technologies, are engaged in an uncommon public dispute regarding a foldable phone patent, demonstrating the escalating rivalry within China's smartphone industry. This disagreement started last Saturday when Richard Yu Chengdong, Huawei's CEO for consumer goods, criticized unnamed competitors for taking their intellectual property and rebranding it, with particular attention paid to Xiaomi's advanced 'keel hinge' design.
In their subsequent response on Tuesday, Xiaomi adamantly denied the allegations, characterizing them as both inaccurate and slanderous. According to one of Xiaomi's official Weibo accounts, Xiaomi's three-element hinge was patented in January 2021, a full five months before Huawei’s twin-track design was authorized by the China National Intellectual Property Administration.
Xiaomi further underscored that Huawei only submitted an application for a three-track hinge design patent in October 2021. Transpiring during a period of increasing competition in the field of foldable phones, the contention has come into sharp focus. The market for these devices is predicted to triple by 2027, amounting to 50 million units each year as per IDC, an electronics industry consultancy.
Though foldable phones currently represent just 1% of total smartphone shipments, they are expected to account for 5% of total smartphone wholesale revenues this year due to their higher price point. The availability of foldable smartphones has surged after industry giant Samsung Electronics led the way with the Galaxy Fold launch in 2019.
Many brands, including Motorola, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Oppo unveiled their own foldable models thereafter. On top of that, Google entered the competition this year with the release of the USD 1,799 Pixel Fold in May, adorned with a 7.6-inch primary display and a secondary 5.8-inch panel.
These companies have been tirelessly working to decrease the size of the 'crease' on the foldable phone screen, a task made difficult by hardware and engineering limitations. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun clarified that their latest hinge design enhances durability, with the creasing augmented by merely 10 microns after 200,000 folds.
Vivo, another dominant Chinese phone company that rolled out the Vivo X Fold 2 and Vivo X Flip in May, has utilized a blend of flexible glass and adhesive to minimize the crease size with usage. Following suit, Samsung’s most recent Galaxy Z Fold 5, too launched in May, boasts a teardrop-shaped hinge for a less visible crease. Not lagging behind, Huawei’s foldable model, Mate X5, flew off the shelves soon after its September release, owing to its excellent 7-nanometre system-on-a-chip processor, the same one used in the Mate 60 Pro series.
