The smartphone market is undergoing a slow recovery with a 10% decrease in shipments, equating to 258.2 million units in the second quarter, as per the latest research by Canalys. These statistics point towards a market slowdown, contrasting a previous report from April which showed a plummet to 269.8 million units. The report showed Samsung retaining its leadership status by shipping 53 million units. Apple secured the second spot by shipping 43 million units, thereby controlling a 17% market share.

Following Samsung and Apple, Xiaomi secured the third spot by shipping 33.2 million units with normalized inventory levels. Holding its fourth position with a 10% market share and 25.2 million units is OPPO, which includes the OnePlus brand. The Transsion Group, housing brands such as Tecno, Infinix, and iTel, made an entrance into the top five by shipping 22.7 million units, thus experiencing a 22% annual growth.

"A narrowing decline in the global smartphone sector is aided by an industry-wide inventory reduction along with signs of demand surging in specific regional markets," stated Amber Liu, Analyst at Canalys. Samsung's conservative approach amidst profitability pressures and a sluggish semiconductor industry recovery was highlighted by Liu. Samsung has seen its worst Q2 performance since 2013. However, with the release of its latest Galaxy Z Flip and Fold models, it displayed its aspirations to compete with Apple in the luxury market.

Liu predicts a moderate drop in the global smartphone arena for 2023. She believes that emerging vendors, with their adaptability and openness to new market possibilities, will have a primary role in shaping the industry's future.
