US smartphone sales have seen a significant downturn in the second quarter of 2023, falling a sharp 24% compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. This rapid decrease was reported by Counterpoint Research, where they indicated a sluggish market performance across all fronts. However, the decline presents a mixed picture when assessed across major platforms. Android, for instance, experienced an even steeper decline, with units sold falling by a considerable 38% year-over-year (YoY).

On the other hand, iPhone's fall, albeit existent, was a more measured 6% YoY. What's more, despite the slight reduction in shipped units in comparison to the same quarter last year, Apple's share of the market grew. Analysts suggest this resilience was driven in part by strong promotional offers from carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. These included generous discounts on old-generation iPhones and hefty promo credits for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models.

Despite declining smartphone sales, the foldable market emerged as a notable outlier in the overall dismal scenario. Manufacturers are eyeing alternatives and innovative designs; for example, Motorola and Google have introduced their new foldable models: Razr+ and Pixel Fold, respectively. These mark new milestones in a market marked by persistent competition, largely dominated by Samsung with its Galaxy foldables series.

The continuing success of Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold devices has signaled potential growth for foldable smartphones. As a matter of fact, Counterpoint Research anticipates the succeeding quarter (Q3 2023) could witness the highest-ever foldable shipments in the US. Despite a struggling market, new dimensions such as these may help revive the industry.

Apple and Android's performance during this quarter is quite indicative of the divergences within the smartphone industry. While it showed a general trend of slowdown in sales, it also highlighted instances of certain stability and potential areas of growth. As the industries continue to battle it out, emerging innovations such as foldable smartphones, may give the industry a much-needed boost, thereby making the platform war even more exciting.
