Amazfit has a vast array of smartwatches and the latest addition in the Lifestyle & Business series is the Active model. Priced at US$149.99, it competes with models like GTS 4 and GTS 4 Mini. The Amazfit Active is offered in three color options. Aesthetic features include a golden metal ring in Lavender Purple and Petal Pink, paired with pink or rose-colored bands. An upgraded Lavender version costs an extra US$10 and comes with a stainless steel frame and vegan leather strap. A Midnight Black variant also exists, featuring a black case with a grey metal frame paired with an anthracite band. This smartwatch extends compatibility to both iOS and Android devices.
The Amazfit Active, primarily plastic in make, also incorporates an aluminum frame around its display. The 1.75-inch rectangular display is protected by tempered glass. Key features such as a button and microphone are placed beneath the frame on the right side. The button offers firm tactile feedback. It also has a speaker on its left side. The band, 0.78 inches wide, has a standard connection and can be easily swapped using the levers on the spring bars. Weighing just 1.26 oz with the strap and 0.88 oz without it, the Amazfit Active is tremendously light.
The smartwatch setup mandates the installation of the Zepp app. The devices connect swiftly by scanning the QR code on the smartwatch. Permission for actions such as phone calls and app notifications must be granted for setup. Upon completion, the Amazfit Active provides a tutorial covering all features and gestures. The movements are showcased but not performed interactively by the user. The Zepp app is organized into four parts. The 'Start' section offers tiles for readiness, steps, sleep, Zepp Aura, heart rate, PAI, and training history. Additional sections are provided for sleep and training. Under the 'Profile' option, users can modify data and goals stored with Zepp and also access Amazfit Active settings.
The Active smartwatch is navigated using a 1.75-inch touchscreen and a tactile button. Pressing the button brings up the app overview in list form. Within the app or menus, pressing the button always returns to the watch face. A long-press of the button can launch any app, with the voice assistant launched by default. Pulling down the menu provides access to theater or bedtime mode, screen brightness adjustment, and the flashlight function. Swiping upwards reveals the notification menu. Horizontal swipes take you through the tiles with default options like Standby, Activity, Heart Rate, Weather, Training, and the Daily Overview.
The inclusion of a microphone and speaker enables phone calls directly from the smartwatch. The sound quality is adequate with no background noise, and clear transmission of voice is achieved. Lack of a SIM card limits phone call functionality to when the paired smartphone is within Bluetooth range. The smartwatch features a dedicated phone app for viewing call lists and frequently contacted numbers. Up to 50 favorite contacts can be manually added. Incoming calls can either be notified or handled directly by the smartwatch. The Amazfit Active shows notifications seamlessly, allowing for full email reading.
Amazfit utilises Alexa as its voice assistant. Operation is only possible through pairing with a smartphone. While inputs are accurately recognized, the speaker volume could be improved. The usage of Alexa on the Active requires account registration in the Zepp app. For additional health functions, the readiness function is a recent introduction. This feature evaluates physical and mental recovery, sleep heart rate, variability during sleep, breathing quality, and body temperature. Personal Activity Intelligence, a central metric used by Zepp, assesses the activity level.
Designed as a budget smartwatch, the Active boasts an extensive feature set, including a light case and high-quality construction. The Zepp app features are impressive, with the free version offering a variety of data and options. Accurate navigation and body measurements heighten its usefulness. Though more accurate gadgets exist, they come with a heftier price. Its feature set makes it a good sports smartwatch, and its resolution and screen size are appreciated. However, there are brighter smartwatches in the market. Despite this, the Active's brightness surpasses the more expensive GTS 4 and GTR 4.
