Meta, the multinational technology corporation renowned for controlling Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, introduced an app named Threads in 2023. Threads remarkably acquired 100 million users in its first five days of launch, marking a global record for the swiftest advancement to 100 million downloads. Yet, by August, daily active users plummeted by 80%, and the average session on the app declined from 21 minutes to a mere three minutes.
A study conducted by TRG Datacenters on the widespread use of social media apps concluded that Instagram was the most sought-after application for deletion, with over 1 million users globally probing for methods to erase their accounts monthly in 2023. Similarly, Snapchat witnessed a considerable rise in users seeking to eradicate their accounts, despite a striking user count of 750 million.
Reportedly, there are around 4.8 billion social media users worldwide. This supposedly symbolizes 59.9% of the total global populace and up to 92.7% of all internet users. The average social media user interacts with approximately 6.7 unique platforms each month, devoting an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes per day across these networks.
In July 2023, Meta, the same technology giant that own Instagram and Facebook, announced the arrival of Threads, a new application developed for sharing text updates and joining in public interactions. In just five days, the app seized a whopping 100 million users, setting a new record for quickest 100 million downloads globally. However, by August, reports surfaced, stating an 80% decline in active users since its launch and average time users spent on the app cut down from 21 minutes in July to just three minutes by November.
With a scenario of rapid rise and fall of smartphone applications, TRG Datacenters decided to delve into apps that lost favor in 2023. Using the most popular social networks worldwide data set acquired from Statista, the company carefully picked out nine applications with the most users worldwide that are available in several countries. They then analyzed how often 'how to delete Facebook account' was being searched per month on average over the past 12 months.
The most desirable app users wanted to delete was Instagram, with more than 1 million users worldwide looking up ‘how to delete Instagram account’ every month that year. Even though Instagram still holds a massive user population of 2 billion users worldwide, with a million accounts continually looking to delete their accounts each month, the application might face an end to its 'Instagrammable' era within a year's timeframe.
Following Instagram, Snapchat that first went live in 2011, had almost 130,000 users seeking to delete their accounts per month in 2023. While this number is significantly less than Instagram, it represents a large fraction of their 750 million users.
